Musk Floods Midterms With Cash

New FEC filings reveal a massive surge in funding for the Texas Senate race as election day approaches.

A Federal Election Commission report filed on Thursday evening reveals that Elon Musk’s personal political committee, America PAC, injected more than $76 million into the 2026 midterm election cycle during the first two weeks of October. This latest disbursement marks a significant acceleration in funding for the Republican side of the ballot as the campaign enters its final stretch. The timing suggests an effort to maximize financial pressure on key races just before voters head to the polls.

The bulk of this recent expenditure was directed toward the contested Texas Senate seat. In just two weeks, the PAC allocated $15.2 million to this single race, a figure that is double the total amount spent there during the entire summer. Of that sum, $12.4 million was used to attack Democratic candidate James Talarico, while $2.8 million went toward promoting Republican contender Ken Paxton. Subsequent daily filings indicate that another $9.1 million has been spent against Talarico since the initial report, bringing the total cycle spending against him to nearly $28 million. This single candidate now accounts for approximately 40 percent of everything America PAC has spent supporting or opposing candidates this year.

Beyond the Texas race, the PAC has notably shifted its advertising strategy toward digital platforms. The group spent $11.4 million on online ads during the same two-week period, a figure that rivals its combined spending on traditional mailers and text messages. This pivot to digital channels suggests an attempt to reach voters through the devices they use most frequently, potentially altering the traditional landscape of political advertising in the final days of the election.

The financial commitment from Musk is not an isolated event but part of a broader pattern of support for Republican causes. According to an analysis of FEC filings by WIRED, Musk has contributed over $445 million to various Republican political groups this cycle, solidifying his status as the largest known individual donor in the midterms. Since July alone, more than $165 million has flowed into America PAC. Despite the scale of this financial intervention, America PAC declined to comment on the latest filings or its strategic goals for the upcoming election.

Musk has also maintained an active presence on social media regarding the Texas race, leveraging his platform to influence public perception. On Wednesday, he posted on X that there is "something deeply wrong with Talarico," later labeling him a "creep" and claiming without provided evidence that the Democrat "would vote to take away your kids and transition them." Earlier in the month, Musk amplified a false claim that Talarico had been treated at a mental health facility. Talarico responded to these attacks by stating, "There is something deeply wrong with a political system that allows one trillionaire to buy his own personal US Senator."

The Texas Senate race remains statistically competitive. An Emerson College poll conducted from October 17 to 19 among 1,000 likely voters showed Talarico leading by a slim margin of 48 percent to 46 percent. This difference falls within the poll’s 3-point margin of error, indicating that the race is effectively a toss-up. The heavy financial investment by America PAC underscores how closely contested the outcome may be, with both sides vying for a decisive advantage in the final days.

The stakes for Musk extend well beyond the outcome of the Senate race in Texas. If Democrats secure the House, committee chairs have signaled plans to investigate his role in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), as well as his companies’ federal contracts. California Democrat Zoe Lofgren has described the number of potential conflicts of interest as "astounding." A unified Democratic control of Congress would pose even greater challenges for Musk, potentially leading to more rigorous oversight of his business dealings.

Recent actions by Silicon Valley Democrats have added another layer of scrutiny. On Friday, Representatives Sam Liccardo, Jimmy Panetta, and Ro Khanna sent a letter to the White House demanding an investigation into restrictions on SpaceX’s Starshield satellite service in Ukraine. The lawmakers vowed that the next Congress would "closely scrutinize federal funding awarded to Mr. Musk’s businesses." This move highlights the growing political risk associated with Musk’s vast commercial empire if the balance of power shifts in Washington.

As the election nears its conclusion, the interplay between Musk’s personal wealth and political influence continues to be a central theme. The sheer volume of funds deployed in the final weeks of the campaign raises questions about the role of individual donors in shaping legislative outcomes. With millions of dollars spent in a matter of days, the financial footprint of America PAC is likely to be a focal point for post-election analysis and political commentary.

Looking ahead, the impact of this spending will depend on how effectively it translates into voter turnout and persuasion in key districts. The Texas Senate race, in particular, will serve as a bellwether for the success of this strategy. Whether the influx of cash can tip a close race or if other factors will dominate remains to be seen. For now, the political landscape is being reshaped by unprecedented levels of individual financial engagement.
