iPhone Duo Production Surge Means More Phones For You

Apple is significantly ramping up manufacturing of its new folding device to meet unexpectedly high pre-order numbers.

Apple is boosting production of the iPhone Duo by more than 40% to address the massive volume of orders for the device. The company is increasing its shipment targets from 9.7 million units to 14 million units for the first year, a move driven by what Apple has called “extraordinary” pre-order demand. This manufacturing expansion aims to fulfill orders that are currently shipping weeks later than expected.

The situation began when pre-orders opened on Friday, and within moments, delivery dates for the folding device slipped into late January. Apple responded by limiting customers to a maximum of two devices per person to curb scalping. While the company initially stated the delays were due to high demand, it was unclear at that point if the issue lay with limited supply or overwhelming interest.

Reports from supply chain sources indicate that Apple has ramped up production to meet the continued strong demand for the device. Consequently, some customers who initially received later delivery estimates have since been notified that their shipping dates have moved to earlier times. This shift suggests the company is successfully accelerating its fulfillment schedule to get devices into customers' hands sooner.

Early users of the iPhone Duo are currently navigating a transition period where third-party applications have not yet been fully optimized for the new form factor. Apple has stated that the situation is improving rapidly as developers begin to update their software. Reviews based on the first week of usage have highlighted this lack of app support as a primary concern among early adopters.

Another point raised in early reviews involves the device's reliance on Touch ID rather than other biometric methods. However, reports indicate that Apple is already testing prototypes for the iPhone Duo 2 which feature Face ID. This suggests the company is actively working to address feedback from the current model for its next generation of devices.
